For months, protesters around the world have been calling for a ceasefire in the brutal Israeli war of revenge against Palestinians in Gaza. On Monday, March 25, after 171 days of carnage, the UN Security Council finally took notice and voted to adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire.

The international community has been calling on Israel for months now to end its weaponization of starvation against the civilian population of Gaza. Israel’s publicly stated hope is that by inflicting suffering on the Palestinian people they can extract a better negotiated deal with Hamas.

The third US veto of UN Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire was not received well in the Middle East, although most lost hope in Washington long ago.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was very quick to answer a question posed to him during his Feb. 7 press conference in Jerusalem after meeting Israeli officials. Asked if he could see any role for Hamas in the postwar period, Blinken answered promptly with an emphatic “no.”
