  • The Saudi Green Initiative aims to promote eco-friendly practices, such as reducing waste in manufacturing
  • On International Mother Earth Day, 抖阴短视频 continues its effort to mitigate the effects of climate change

RIYADH:听As the world marks International Mother Earth Day on April 22, 抖阴短视频 continues its effort to mitigate the effects of climate change, accelerate its transition to green energy, promote sustainability, and protect natural habitats through the Saudi Green Initiative.

Launched in 2021, one key SGI target is to reduce carbon emissions by 278 million tonnes per annum by 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2060. The Kingdom hopes to reach this milestone through investments in renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

Three wind projects are under development in the Kingdom, while a fourth, Dumat Al-Jandal, is already the largest operational wind farm in the Middle East, with a 400-megawatt capacity.

抖阴短视频 also operates 13 solar photovoltaic projects. The Al-Henakiyah project is under development and will generate a capacity of 1,500 MW, ranking it among the world鈥檚 five largest solar farms.

FASTFACT

鈥 International Mother Earth Day, celebrated every year on April 22, was recognized by the UN General Assembly in 2009 to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.

Besides wind and solar, the Kingdom is also building a green hydrogen project in NEOM and a carbon capture project at the Aramco Research Center at the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology.听

The green hydrogen project will produce clean energy derived using renewables, while the carbon capture project focuses on capturing and storing carbon dioxide to help mitigate climate change.

Beyond the transition to green energy, SGI includes projects designed to combat desertification, preserve biodiversity, and promote eco-friendly practices, such as reducing waste in manufacturing.

Economic cities and special economic zones are viewed as one solution to the waste problems associated with commercial activity. In the Gulf Cooperation Council area, these are fast becoming a topic of interest for policymakers and businesses.

抖阴短视频 is taking proactive steps to build self-powering economic cities. Regulated by the Economic Cities and Special Zones Authority, the Kingdom aims to attract investment, promote economic growth, and create jobs.听

鈥淭hat鈥檚 a real window of opportunity to identify the diversity of industries that can exist within economic cities and how they can benefit from these opportunities to collaborate, extend their networks, and find opportunities for local sourcing,鈥 Rana Hajirasouli, founder of The Surpluss climate tech platform based in the UAE, told Arab News.

Opinion

This section contains relevant reference points, placed in (Opinion field)

Hajirasouli says the annual waste and surplus created by manufacturers worldwide is valued at approximately $780 billion.

This vast sum represents a missed opportunity for companies to maximize their profits and reduce their environmental impact by reassessing waste management practices and adopting more sustainable strategies.听

鈥淭he problem is not just the waste we throw out and the emissions 鈥 it鈥檚 also unoccupied warehouse spaces, unoptimized logistics,鈥 she said.

The Kingdom has launched four such economic cities: the King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh, Jazan Economic City, Prince Abdulaziz bin Musaid Economic City in Hail, and Knowledge Economic City in Madinah.

Establishing these spaces is seen as a key strategy for 抖阴短视频 to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenues, while also promoting long-term environmental sustainability.

Collaboration between businesses cohabiting economic cities could be one way in which they can mitigate the harmful effects of their waste production through innovative solutions and circular economy principles.

鈥淚nstead of focusing on trading carbon, businesses essentially find ways to reduce their emissions through the circular economy and daily-basis operational changes,鈥 said Hajirasouli. 鈥淎ccounts of that are evident in sustainability reports.鈥

Such collaborations, known as industrial symbiosis, align with sustainable development and circular economy goals, emphasizing the importance of resource conservation, waste reduction, and environmental protection.听

They involve reusing waste and by-products generated by one particular industry or industrial process to serve as raw materials for another.听

By adopting these principles, businesses can transform their waste streams into valuable resources, thereby creating a more circular and sustainable production system, said Hajirasouli.

DID YOUKNOW?

鈥 Dumat Al-Jandal in 抖阴短视频 is the largest operational wind farm in the Middle East, with capacity to generate 400 megawatts of power.

鈥 The total cost of waste and surplus generated by companies globally is estimated to be about $780 billion a year.

鈥 The Jazan IGCC plant is the largest gasification facility of its kind in the world and can produce up to 3.8 gigawatts of power.

鈥淥ne interesting example is in Denmark where various companies in a small 16-sq. km area use excess steam from the power plants that aren鈥檛 needed for electricity and that goes to other factories,鈥 she said.听

This creates a closed-loop system where materials, energy, and resources are repurposed rather than wasted.听

Aramco鈥檚 fully integrated Jazan Refinery and Petrochemical Complex is setting the stage for similar industrial symbiosis in 抖阴短视频鈥檚 Jazan Economic City.听

The Jazan oil refinery, designed to have an output capacity of up to 400,000 barrels per day, is expected to provide raw materials for the integrated gasification combined-cycle plant, which generates power and industrial gases.

In the process of refining crude oil, synthetic gas 鈥 or syngas 鈥 is produced, which is typically used as fuel for industry and shipping.听

The hot syngas stream produced by gasification must be cooled down before processing. However, thanks to industrial symbiosis, that heat will not be wasted.

The plan is to capture the refinery鈥檚 waste steam and use it to drive turbines to create electricity in the power generation plant.听

However, the steam is produced at extremely high temperatures 鈥 far higher than what is required to turn the turbines. This means the process could still result in a significant waste of energy.听

To prevent this, the Jazan refinery will absorb and use this heat in recovery units.

Adopting mitigation approaches and industrial symbiosis such as these in 抖阴短视频鈥檚 economic cities is seen as an ideal path to promoting sustainable practices.

By fostering collaboration and resource sharing among industries, these economic cities can not only enhance their environmental performance but also contribute to the overall sustainable development of the Kingdom.

鈥楥limate action must be a collective effort,鈥 says COP CEO Soltanov

鈥楥limate action must be a collective effort,鈥 says COP CEO Soltanov
  • Fight against climate change will fail unless countries come together
  • National interest linked with global actions

BAKU: Countries from around the world must come together in a 鈥渃ollective effort鈥 to fight climate change, COP29 CEO Elnur Soltanov told Arab News.

鈥淲hen we say, 鈥榠n solidarity for a greener world,鈥 we mean that climate action must be a collective effort. Unless it is collective, it won鈥檛 work, and we risk losing everything,鈥 said Soltanov.

He pointed out the moral imperative of international solidarity, particularly for nations that contribute minimally to global warming yet suffer the most from its effects, such as African countries and small island nations.

鈥淎frican countries, contribute less than 4 percent to global warming, but the majority of climate-vulnerable countries are in the African continent,鈥 he said.

For example, as of last year, extreme heatwaves during summer have critically affected the northern parts of Africa, such as Tunisia. The temperature in Tunis reached 49掳C, whereas Agadir in Morocco, recorded 50.4掳C, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

One of the major components of this solidarity is climate finance, which Soltanov believes is essential for creating a fair balance of responsibilities among nations.

鈥淒ifferent countries have different responsibilities, in terms of what is happening in the world today. There are beneficiaries, there are not so many beneficiaries, so this balance and fairness between them could only be provided in case we are moving collectively, and to move collectively, we believe we should deliver on climate finance this year,鈥 he said, stressing that climate finance is critical for enabling of collective action.

Soltanov acknowledged that the outcomes of such gatherings are frequently scrutinized.

鈥淭he crisis we are facing is real, it is significant and therefore whenever it is helped, whatever the outcomes are, there will be criticism. It is not about Azerbaijan, it is not about 抖阴短视频, it is not about any country,鈥 he said.

Despite the criticism, the CEO prefers to be heavily focused on achieving tangible results and delivering meaningful climate action instead of focusing on who to blame for this global environmental problem.

鈥淲e are ready to listen to constructive arguments,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hat would I tell everybody is, if you want to serve that national interest of Azerbaijan, you need to serve the global interest, which is about producing outcomes and deliverables in terms of tackling the climate crisis.鈥

He added: 鈥淥ur focus is on delivering action, climate action, that is really consequential.鈥

Soltanov noted that developed countries have special responsibilities to assist others, highlighting the need for a cooperative approach to ensure that nobody is left behind.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 see the difference between oil producing or oil consuming country because oil transactions, gas transactions and coal transactions happen in a free market. Nobody is forced to buy from anybody.鈥

He added: 鈥淭herefore, all the countries are oil countries and all the countries are gas countries because the entire global development models are based on hydrocarbons, and we are trying to figure out these alternative models of development so that development and energy security, development and poverty are not things we choose from, they happen at the same time.鈥

Azerbaijan and 抖阴短视频, for example, can share their capabilities, experience, and partnerships to bring more to the table.

鈥淲e believe that, the way we look at, if there is anything 抖阴短视频, a country like Azerbaijan, could do for us, they are valuable in terms of experience and technology they acquire because they are at the forefront of the other forms of energy developments.鈥

Soul searching: How astrology and crystals are captivating younger generations

Mawadda鈥檚 serene collection of crystals and spiritual tools, offering moments of peace and introspection in a fast-paced world.
  • Younger generations are more open to exploring unconventional topics, says astrology enthusiast

RIYADH: In recent years, young Saudis have been increasingly drawn to astrology and crystals.

Arab News spoke to several Saudis who explained how this trend reflects a deeper desire for self-exploration and healing, particularly among the younger generation, who are navigating an era of rapid change and seeking guidance beyond traditional frameworks.

Young Saudis say that astrology 鈥 a system linking the position of planets to personality traits 鈥 as well as crystals, which some believe aid in personal healing, have provided avenues for them to explore their identities, face their anxieties and find meaning.

Wedad Bughararah says her whimsical workspace decor creates a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere. (Supplied)

Mawadda Al-Surehi, owner of AGAPE & Co., a store in 抖阴短视频, described her journey as a response to a society that she believes often overlooks the well-being of the soul.

鈥淲e鈥檙e in an era where people are becoming more materialistic, focusing on possessions and forgetting their souls,鈥 she said.

Al-Surehi鈥檚 products purportedly support meditation, inner peace and calmness. 鈥淐rystals are often underrated and seen only as pretty or aesthetic, but they actually carry a lot of energy and frequency,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 believe they鈥檙e part of our spiritual journey and have been for centuries.鈥

HIGHLIGHTS

鈥 In a time of rapid change, uncertainty and global challenges, astrology and crystals promise young Saudis a sense of control, comfort and connection.

鈥 Mawadda Al-Surehi predicts that crystals will become a staple in the lives of many Saudis, and are not just a passing trend.

鈥淐rystals work like lemon and honey for the flu,鈥 Al-Surehi said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e for healing the spiritual side of you.鈥

She predicted that crystals will become a staple in the lives of many Saudis, and are not just a passing trend.

Salsabil Al-Shajiri spoke about how her initial interest in astrology stemmed from curiosity. 鈥淚 was interested in learning how these practices had captivated so many people,鈥 she said. While she does not view astrology as an absolute truth, Salsabil appreciates its potential to help people reflect on their characteristics and tendencies, providing insight into relationships and behaviors.

She believes that the popularity of astrology among young Saudis is largely due to a desire for self-exploration. 鈥淭hey seek a way to discover their true selves,鈥 she said, explaining how studying astrology has improved her mental health and perspective on life, helping her progress through personal development with a more positive outlook.

We鈥檙e in an era where people are becoming more materialistic, focusing on possessions and forgetting their souls.

Mawadda Al-Surehi, AGAPE & Co. owner

Abeer Ahmed shares a similar sentiment. 鈥淎t the age of 27, astrology fits naturally and intuitively into my life,鈥 she said. For Ahmed, astrology provides insight into daily life, although she approaches it with a balanced perspective. 鈥淚鈥檝e learned through the years to take everything with a grain of salt,鈥 she added, highlighting how she views astrology as a supportive tool rather than a definitive guide.

Ahmed believes that young Saudis are drawn to astrology because of its fun and mysterious nature. 鈥淭he idea that we each have a birth chart, unique to us, and can gain insight through studying constellations 鈥 that鈥檚 so fun,鈥 she said. Younger generations, Abeer said, are more open to exploring unconventional topics. At various points in her life, astrology has provided her with confidence and a sense of direction. However, she cautioned against allowing it to dominate one鈥檚 life, highlighting that nothing should replace one鈥檚 own inner compass.

For Jomanah Nawaf, an interest in astrology and crystals began in 2018 when she discovered her placement 鈥 an aspect of astrology that attributes personality characteristics related to the time of a person鈥檚 birth.

Her particular placement of Sagittarius and Jupiter is said to represent a drive for personal freedom, truth and understanding 鈥 qualities that Jomanah found 鈥渋ronically fitting.鈥

What started as a casual interest on social media quickly became a daily ritual. 鈥淣ot a day goes by where I don鈥檛 use my astrology knowledge for personal reasons,鈥 Nawaf said, adding that she incorporates astrology into everything from salon appointments to medical decisions.

Nawaf said that social media played a significant role in spreading these practices, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when people spent more time online. She likens astrology to a personality test that offers labels to help people understand their experiences. 鈥淎strology helps you understand what鈥檚 going on in your life and brings some relief,鈥 she said. For Jomanah, astrology provides a sense of clarity and control in an unpredictable world, helping her navigate challenges with a calm perspective.

Wedad Bughararah was initially drawn to crystals because of their beauty, not necessarily because she believed they held energy. 鈥淛ust having them around brought a sense of calm,鈥 she said. This sense of peace led her to explore spirituality more deeply, discovering a world that felt both comforting and enlightening.

Bughararah commented on the generational draw to age-old practices. 鈥淢ost of generation Z is struggling with depression because we don鈥檛 see a lot of hope for the future,鈥 she said, adding that these practices provide a beacon of hope in an otherwise unpredictable life.

For some, like Al-Surehi, spirituality is a holistic journey that encompasses mind, body and soul. For others, like Ahmed and Nawaf, astrology serves as a tool for navigating life鈥檚 complexities.

In a time of rapid change, uncertainty and global challenges, astrology and crystals promise young Saudis a sense of control, comfort and connection. As Al-Surehi, eloquently puts it: 鈥淎t the end of the day, you鈥檙e a soul inside a body.鈥

For this generation, spirituality presents itself as both a medicine for the soul and a guide to navigating the complexities of modern life.
