LONDON: “Don’t believe what you read” is the main takeaway from a poll of attitudes toward UK media coverage of the Arab world.
Some 22 percent of respondents to an Arab News/YouGov survey perceived UK media coverage of the region to be accurate while 39 percent thought it was inaccurate. Another 39 percent did not have a view either way.
Media experts said that while the poll results reflect an often sensationalist and reductionist rendering of events by the UK media, outlets in the Arab world also need to tell the story of their own region better.

LONDON: A “colossal gap” in understanding of the Arab world among many Britons must be tackled to counter the growing problem of Islamophobia, while a “reset” is needed in UK foreign policy on the region.
Those were key conclusions of an Arab News panel discussion held Monday to coincide with the publication of a poll about Brits’ attitudes toward the Arab world.
The Arab News/YouGov survey, conducted in conjunction with the Council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU), found that 81 percent of the British population said they know little or nothing about the region.

The Arab News/YouGov poll on the attitudes of UK residents toward the Arab world makes for largely depressing reading. More than 80 percent of respondents said they have limited or no knowledge of the region, and more people are not interested in gaining greater knowledge than those who are (35 and 34 percent, respectively).

Fifty years ago, an opinion poll found that 98 percent of the British population knew little or nothing about the Arab world. This was a prime concern for the newly created Council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU).
Today, as the YouGov poll commissioned by Arab News and CAABU highlights, that figure stands at 81 percent. A 17-percentage-point improvement is something, but still shows a worryingly high level of acknowledged ignorance and lack of understanding. It is something mirrored across Europe and North America.

The Arab world is a mystery to most Britons, and only a minority want to find out more about it. When they consider military intervention in the region, they judge it by its likelihood of successfully bringing peace and stability, and conclude that such efforts have generally failed. They have mixed feelings about the influx of Arabs into Britain, wish they would integrate better into local society, and are concerned about growing Islamophobia.

LONDON: The majority of Britons agree with racial profiling of Arabs and Muslims, and 69 percent think the UK should take in fewer refugees from Syria and Iraq, an Arab News/YouGov poll has found.
The wide-ranging poll of 2,142 adults found that UK residents have strong feelings about key Middle East issues — including the fight against Daesh and war in Iraq — but 81 percent admitted to knowing little or nothing about the Arab world.

LONDON: The majority of Britons believe the UK’s foreign policy in the Arab world has been a failure, an exclusive poll by YouGov and this newspaper has revealed.
That has long been the view from the Arab street, influenced by events ranging from the Balfour Declaration of 1917 to the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
The “UK attitudes toward the Arab world” poll, conducted in August, indicates that at least some of those views are echoed in the streets of the UK, with 83 percent of those polled saying Britain was wrong to go to war in Iraq.
