LONDON: Emirati astronaut Sultan AlNeyadi will begin his return to Earth from the International Space Station on Saturday evening at 5:05 p.m. UAE time, the Emirates’ space center confirmed on Friday.

AlNeyadi, the first Arab astronaut deployed on a long-term space mission and the first to complete a spacewalk, will make the journey home after spending six months aboard the ISS.

DUBAI: Manned missions launched by the UAE and ��Ƶ signal “a new era in Arab space exploration,” Emirati astronaut Sultan AlNeyadi has told Arab News from the International Space Station.

As the first Arab astronaut deployed on a long-term space mission, having arrived on the ISS in March alongside three Americans and three Russians, and the first Arab to perform a spacewalk, AlNeyadi is blazing a trail for the Arab world’s budding space industry.

DUBAI: The launch of the UAE’s moon rover has been delayed by one day for “additional pre-flight checks”, it was announced on Wednesday.

Rashid Rover, the Arab world’s first lunar mission, is now scheduled to launch at 8:37 a.m. (GMT) on Thursday, Dec.1, from Cape Canaveral in Florida, US, SpaceX said in a statement.

UAE shortlists 61 candidates for astronaut program

DUBAI: The UAE announced on Sunday that 61 out of 4,305 applicants were shortlisted for the astronaut program that aims to find the next two astronauts for crewed space missions.

The shortlisted candidates include 41 men and 20 women from across the UAE. The average age of the applicants stood at 28-yearsold, with the youngest candidate being 23 and the oldest 39.

The list was first filtered down to 2099 applicants based on their age, educational background, and scientific research experience, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) said in a press release.

The new satellite is named after the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

DUBAI: The vacancy to top all vacancies is still waiting to be filled in the UAE, as the country’s space program continues to search for the next two candidates to be sent to space.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) will keep applications for the UAE Astronaut Program open until March 31, with a possibility of extending until May 1.

The first two Emirati astronauts, Hazzaa Al-Mansouri and Sultan Al-Neyadi, who will also be on the selection board, discussed the expectations they have for the new applicants.

DUBAI: Emirati astronaut Hazza Al-Mansoori landed safely on Earth on Thursday after eight days in orbit on the International Space Station, and immediately wrapped himself in the UAE flag.

Al-Mansoori, 35, touched down in the Kazakh steppes with US astronaut Nick Hague and cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, and all three were placed on fold-out chairs for rest and preliminary medical checks.

“The crew that returned to Earth is feeling well,” the Russian space agency Roscosmos said.
