There are many ways in which the Nakba in 1948 transformed Palestine. Neighborhoods that once stood are now gone, new settlements built and the families that occupied the buildings for generations replaced.

GAZA CITY: Two Palestinians have died from their wounds after being shot Monday by Israeli troops during protests in the Gaza Strip, the territory’s health ministry said Saturday.
The two men killed were 20-year-old Mohammed Mazen Alyan and 58-year-old Moein Abdel-Hamid Al-Saai, the Hamas-run ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said Alyan was wounded east of the Al-Bureij refugee camp, while other medical sources reported Al-Saai was wounded to the east of Gaza City.

The 70th anniversary of what Palestinians call “the catastrophe” was bound to unleash a flurry of new works, of which this is one, about the mass evictions of Palestinians from lands that were taken to establish the state of Israel.

It could be said that history not only changed for Palestinians in 1948, but ended. Still stateless seven decades on, for them the bitterness and trauma are as raw as ever.

Efforts at preserving the memory of the Nakba have resulted in an unparalleled body of oral testimony.

GAZA CITY: Seven weeks after Palestinians in Gaza began their mass protest against the Israeli occupation, opinion in the strip is divided over whether the deaths of demonstrators was a sacrifice worth making.

Residents in the besieged coastal enclave started their “Great March of Return” on March 30, gathering at the border for a prolonged campaign designed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Jewish state’s creation.

LONDON: There could hardly be a more pertinent moment to interview Layla Moran, the first British member of Parliament of Palestinian descent.

The 35-year-old Liberal Democrat tends not to overplay her Arab heritage. “I’m me, it’s part of me but it is not all that I am,” she told Arab News. Her mother, Randa, is a Christian Palestinian from Jerusalem. She has an aunt still living in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

CAIRO/GAZA CITY: The Arab League has called for an investigation into the “crimes” of Israeli forces, following the deaths of scores of demonstrators at the Gaza border, with the Saudi foreign minister reiterating his country’s support for Palestinian rights.

In the deadliest day of violence in Gaza since the end of the 2014 conflict, Israeli forces on Monday killed about 60 Palestinians protesting against the move of the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

GAZA: Palestinian protests on the Gaza-Israel border have dropped off over the past two days, with Israel on Wednesday pointing to what it said were Egyptian efforts to restore calm after dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire.

Gaza’s dominant Hamas movement denied that it was under pressure from neighboring Egypt to scale back the six-week-old demonstrations, and said they would continue, although fewer Palestinians were now gathering in protest tents.

AMMAN: Israel faces mounting regional and international pressure over the deaths of Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border, with South Africa, Turkey, Belgium and Ireland withdrawing their ambassadors from Tel Aviv and the UN Commission on Human Rights calling for an independent inquiry.

RAMALLAH: As Palestinians worldwide mark the Nakba today, the Palestinian catastrophe of 1948, Sara Al-Hilwa clearly remembers the day that changed her life.

“My father came home with a truck. My parents had heard of the Deir Yassin massacre, and were afraid the Jews would come to us next. We took whatever we could, and drove off,” the 76-year-old said, as she sat at her current home — a simple bedroom in Al-Amari refugee camp, south of Ramallah.

Dubai: “I live the Nakba every day and everywhere I go,” Dr. Mohammed Hajjaj, a 71-year-old Palestinian doctor whose family was forced to leave Palestine during the 1948 mass exodus ,told Arab News over a crackly phone line from his home in Amman.

Dr. Hajjaj was just four months old when Israel declared its independence 70 years ago. More than 700,000 Palestinian Arabs were forced to flee the lands they inherited, the businesses they built, and the homes they had grown up in — an event that became known as the Nakba.

Dr. Bishara A. Bahbah, a professor of investment, finance and wealth management who lives in the United States, is one of many Palestinians whose family still has the deed to their land in Palestine, a 68-dunum orchard in the Lod-Jaffa area.

He also has his family’s UNRWA food card which shows the monthly rations they received when they were living both in the Zarqa Refugee Camp and then the Old City of Jerusalem.

RIYADH: As Palestinians mark the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, the Palestinian ambassador to ��Ƶ said they have always been able to count on “special relations” with the Kingdom.

“The people of ��Ƶ consider the problems of the people of Palestine as their own,” said Basem Abdullah Al-Agha, in an exclusive interview with Arab News.

“Our relationship is historical, from King Abdulaziz, the founder of the modern Kingdom, to King Salman, we have shared very cordial and brotherly relations and (given) timely assistance.”

JERUSALEM: For Pierre Krahenbuhl, the commissioner general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), it was a rare piece of good news during the biggest crisis in the history of his organization.

During the Arab League summit in the Saudi city of Dhahran, King Salman announced a $50 million contribution to help support the UN agency responsible for the care of Palestinian refugees. Within days the UAE had followed suit.
