MAKKAH: When Ali Ahad sprinkled water over the head of a middle-aged pilgrim who descended from Mount Arafat, the man kissed his forehead in gratitude.

The Pakistani volunteer was there to help as hundreds of thousands of Muslims from around the world offered prayers of repentance on the sacred hill on Friday.

“Can there be anything more rewarding than this?” he told Arab News, as he handed a bottle of water to another pilgrim.

The Gujranwala native said he has been working as electrician at the Grand Mosque in Makkah for the past five years.

The Indian government on Monday asked local authorities to assist the movement of Pakistani nationals to the Attari-Wagah border crossing from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s health ministry spokesman, Sajid Shah, told Arab News on Saturday the number of people willing to get tested for COVID-19 in the country had decreased, even though the government had not reduced daily testing capacity amid optimistic rates of recovery.

After reporting its first case on February 26, Pakistan has so far officially registered nearly 213,000 infections of COVID-19 and 4,619 deaths. Of those infected, 125,000-- more than 50 percent-- have recovered.

ISLAMABAD: Khurshid Ahmed had never thought he would be risking his life while serving his hotel guests in the heart of the federal capital.

The three-star residential facility where he works as a supervisor was turned into a temporary quarantine center by the government in March to facilitate the stranded Pakistanis returning to their homeland from other countries amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The repatriates get an option to stay at state-run quarantine centers or designated establishments under government control.

ISLAMABAD: A group of volunteers arrived at a local hotel in Islamabad on Thursday to disinfect the premises before 250 stranded Pakistanis from ��Ƶ were brought to the facility by the authorities on Friday which had turned the building into a quarantine center early last month.
The young members of the team belonged to Al-Mustafa Scouts who were forced to temporarily discontinue their education due to the COVID-19 situation.
