TAIPEI: War has no winners and peace is priceless, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Saturday in Hawaii after visiting a memorial to the attack on Pearl Harbor on a trip to the United States that has angered Beijing.
Lai is making a sensitive two-day trip to Hawaii that is officially only a stopover on the way to three Pacific island nations that maintain formal ties with Taiwan, which China claims as its territory.

LOS ANGELES: Hone, a Category 1 hurricane, brushed past Hawaii’s largest island on Sunday, bringing heavy rain and dangerous swells, the US National Hurricane Center said.

The Pacific storm, with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles (130 kilometers) per hour, was “gradually moving away from the Big Island,” the agency said at 11:00 am local time (2100 GMT).

“Tropical storm conditions will continue on the Big Island into the early afternoon, with gradually diminishing wind and rainfall through the evening,” the agency said.

LOS ANGELES: A Hawaii airport was briefly evacuated after a Japanese man was found with two inert grenades in his hand luggage, police said following his arrest.
Officers cleared the terminal on Tuesday while a bomb squad moved in to investigate the suspicious items, which were picked up on an X-ray machine.
“The Hilo International Airport experienced a brief halt in operations” for little over an hour, Hawaii police said in a statement.
The bomb squad “determined the items to be inert grenades,” police reported, meaning they were not dangerous.

The announcement and increased death toll came as residents of Lahaina were allowed back into the town for the first time — with most finding their homes reduced to ashes, and even the lucky few angry at a sense of abandonment.
“Where is the government? Where are they?” said a man who did not want to be named.

Forest fires have destroyed several towns on the island, with thousands injured and the death toll climbing to at least 80.

The Kingdom’s embassy in the US called on Saudi nationals in Hawaii to “quickly leave the islands and adhere to safety regulations issued by local authorities,” a statement carried by Saudi Press Agency said.

HONOLULU: US scientists declared Tuesday that two active Hawaii volcanoes — one where lava destroyed hundreds of homes in 2018 and another where lava recently stalled before reaching a crucial Big Island highway — have stopped erupting.
“Kilauea is no longer erupting,” the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said in a statement Tuesday, followed by a separate one saying, “Mauna Loa is no longer erupting.”
Alert levels for both volcanoes were reduced from watch to advisory.

HONOLULU: About a week-and-a-half since the world’s largest volcano began erupting, Hawaii officials continue to brace for slow-moving lava to intersect with a crucial Big Island road, even though scientists are not sure when or even if that will happen.

On Wednesday morning, lava from Mauna Loa, which began erupting Nov. 27 after being quiet for 38 years, was 1.8 miles (2.89 kilometers) from Saddle Road, also known as Route 200 or Daniel K. Inouye Highway, scientists with the US Geological Survey said. The road connects the east and west sides of the vast island.

HONOLULU: A jury on Thursday found two Native Hawaiian men guilty of a hate crime for the 2014 beating of a white man who was fixing up a house he purchased in their remote Maui neighborhood.
In an unusual move, the US Department of Justice sought to prosecute Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi and Levi Aki Jr. and secured a federal grand jury indictment in December 2020 charging each with a hate crime count punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

HONOLULU: Towering waves on Hawaii’s south shores crashed into homes and businesses, spilled across highways and upended weddings over the weekend.
The large waves — some more than 20 feet (6 meters) high — came from a combination of a strong south swell that peaked Saturday evening, particularly high tides and rising sea levels associated with climate change, the National Weather Service said Monday.
A wedding Saturday evening in Kailua-Kona was interrupted when a set of large waves swamped the event, sending tables and chairs crashing toward guests.
