Sharjah to hold Arab Women Sports Tournament in Feb.

Ten Arab countries including the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Palestine, Oman, Sudan, Jordan, Yemen, Egypt, and Iraq have confirmed their participation for the Second Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), which will take place in Sharjah between Feb.2 and 12.
The event, which is open to women clubs in all Arab countries, have listed seven games including basketball, volleyball, table tennis, shooting, fencing, archery and athletics. The UAE and Bahrain will race in all the seven games, while Qatar will be fighting in six items.
“Rio de Janeiro Olympics is the target for us”, says Noura Al Homor, head of Clubs Sports Teams at Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC).
"SLC participated at the first AWST in 2012 with competitors in five sports, namely basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, and shooting. This year there are two more sports to AWST’s line-up, archery and fencing teams, and SLC will be represented in all of the disciplines," Al Homor added.
"When Sharjah Ladies Club first organized the tournament in 2012, it was agreed that it would be held every four years, but the great success it achieved in its first edition, as testified by all stakeholders, made us decide to hold it biennially." Al Homor explained.
She also commented on the goals SLC aims to achieve, explaining that the first AWST in 2012 saw SLC teams gain several medals, including gold medals by the volleyball and shooting teams, and a third place by the basketball team, as well as three medals (gold, silver, and bronze) in individual games.
"Our goal in 2014 is to expand our overall achievements, especially now that we are participating in more games. This should be good motivation for players to raise their country's flag up high in this tournament, and seek the first places among participating Arab countries." She added.
Al Homor announced the plan SLC is setting for its competitors, focusing their efforts to achieve one important sports goal, which is participating at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.
