In 1985, the Voice of Germany Radio in Cologne requested a display of photographs to illustrate Riyadh’s cultural and urban development.
Initially planned for a 100-square-meter hall, the project grew exponentially under the support of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who was governor of Riyadh at the time.
His vision transformed it into the “Riyadh Between Yesterday and Today” exhibition, spanning 6,000 square meters and featuring models, videos, photographs and publications that described Riyadh’s remarkable transformation.
After its launch in Germany, where it toured Cologne, Stuttgart and Hamburg, the exhibition returned to Riyadh before embarking on an international journey.
Renamed “The Kingdom Between Yesterday and Today,” it captivated audiences in London, Paris, Cairo, Algiers, Washington D.C., and Toronto, among other cities.
It served as a cornerstone of Ƶ’s cultural diplomacy, presenting the Kingdom’s heritage and modernization efforts in a pioneering, immersive format.
Salmani architecture and traditional Sadu patterns, two central elements of Saudi heritage, made their international debut through this exhibition, leaving a lasting impression on global audiences.
A visionary effort to build bridges
King Salman’s leadership ensured the exhibition went beyond a display of artifacts, creating a profound cultural narrative that outlined Ƶ’s contributions to human civilization.
In the US, the exhibition visited six major cities before moving to Canada, presenting a variety of displays, from traditional Bedouin tents and the Kaaba’s door, to images and films highlighting Saudi culture and urban development.
Prince Bandar bin Sultan, then Saudi ambassador to the US, described the exhibition’s purpose: “We cannot take all Americans to Ƶ, but we can bring Ƶ to the Americans.”
When asked about the costs of hosting the exhibition, Prince Bandar replied: “Americans are worth it.”
Salmani architecture, introduced globally through the exhibition, epitomized a fusion of modernity and heritage. Its geometric designs and natural motifs captured the essence of Ƶ’s cultural identity and progressive vision.
A personal connection
The exhibition holds personal significance for me. In 1990, as a Saudi student in Boston, I volunteered as an usher, introducing visitors to the intricate details of our traditions and aspirations.
Distinguished guests, including Senator Ted Kennedy and John Kerry showed keen interest in learning about Saudi culture.
One of the most memorable moments was meeting Americans who had lived in Ƶ.
They shared photographs and stories, expressing admiration for the Kingdom. These interactions underscored the power of cultural diplomacy in fostering understanding and building friendships.
A call to revive the vision
Today, under the leadership of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Ƶ is undergoing a remarkable transformation, driven by Vision 2030.
Now is the perfect time to revive and expand upon “The Kingdom Between Yesterday and Today” exhibition to display the Kingdom’s progress.
The exhibition could spotlight:
• Tourism: Highlighting treasures such as AlUla, the Red Sea, and Al-Ahsa Oasis.
• Giga-projects: Including NEOM, Qiddiya, and Diriyah Gate, which redefine urban development.
• Major events: Featuring Ƶ’s hosting of the 2027 Asian Football Cup, the 2030 World Expo, and the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The innovative design of venues such as NEOM’s suspended pitch and the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium’s cliffside stands reflect the Kingdom’s seamless integration of culture, sustainability and modernity.
The enduring legacy of cultural diplomacy
“The Kingdom Between Yesterday and Today” exhibition was a cultural event and a declaration of Ƶ’s commitment to global engagement. By sharing its rich heritage, vibrant culture and ambitious projects, the Kingdom built bridges of understanding and friendship that endure to this day.
With its expertise gained nearly four decades ago from “The Kingdom Between Yesterday and Today” exhibition to participating recently in global events such as Expo 2020 Dubai, Ƶ can continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
Reviving this exhibition would not only highlight its progress but also invite the world to witness a country where history, culture, and innovation converge in harmony.
