RIYADH: As the tourism industry prospers in 抖阴短视频, local travel agents are turning to artificial intelligence to help their clients plan dream vacations, offer seamless journeys, and create highly personalized visitor experiences.

As part of its Vision 2030 economic reform agenda, 抖阴短视频 has raised its ambition to attract 150 million tourists a year by the end of the decade. Thanks to an array of AI solutions, this new target could be well within grasp.

NEOM, 抖阴短视频鈥檚 $500 billion mega-city taking shape on the Kingdom鈥檚 northwest coast, will feature a range of innovative tourism experiences, using AI for personalized services, transport and hospitality.

Meanwhile, at the UNESCO World Heritage sites of AlUla and Diriyah, AI-powered augmented reality technology will offer visitors a program of interactive tours through the Kingdom鈥檚 historical sites.

鈥淭he Kingdom is making significant progress in building its local AI talent through ambitious initiatives, collaborating with global AI players, such as Artefact, to upskill its young talent on AI,鈥 Rahul Arya, CEO of tech consultancy Artefact MENA, told Arab News.

鈥淭he Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence鈥檚 major initiatives and events, such as the GAIN Summit, are also putting the Kingdom on the global AI map and positioning it as an AI pioneer in the region.鈥

The latest edition of the Global AI Summit, also known as GAIN, took place in Riyadh between Sept. 10 and 12, offering a platform for experts, academics, corporates and policymakers to advance the discussion on AI.

Oussama Ahmad, Artefact鈥檚 global lead on travel and tourism, attended the summit, held at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center.

鈥淎s an AI practitioner, I am both invigorated and captivated by 抖阴短视频鈥檚 pioneering role in AI, as evidenced by its global leadership in government AI strategy,鈥 he told Arab News.

鈥淚t鈥檚 imperative for me to be at GAIN to witness the latest AI advancements and success stories in the Kingdom and to exchange insights with thought leaders and experts in the domain.鈥

During the event, Ahmad moderated a panel discussion on AI鈥檚 transformative potential for the tourism sector.听

鈥淭his session was part of a 鈥榝irst-of-a-kind鈥 event on AI for Tourism 鈥 a collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism, Saudi Tourism Authority, SDAIA and Artefact,鈥 he said.

鈥淎dditionally, I had the pleasure to sign a memorandum of understanding between Artefact and STA to drive the development of AI solutions to promote 抖阴短视频 as a leading tourism destination and to elevate its visitors鈥 experience.鈥

Ahmad said that AI solutions can enhance the marketing of the Kingdom as a tourist destination by addressing specific perception barriers with targeted messages delivered through the right channels.

鈥淪olutions created by artificial intelligence include monitoring visitors鈥 experiences, addressing pain points and capitalizing on moments of delight, as an outstanding visitor experience is crucial for encouraging repeat visits and referrals,鈥 he said.

鈥淎dditionally, AI can help identify new global events and attractions to be hosted by the Kingdom, plan for participant capacity at these events, and measure their return on investment.鈥

Ahmad highlighted that the Saudi Tourism Authority has developed AI-powered recommendation systems, predictive analytics for visitors and their spending in order to elevate visitor experience and optimize capacity planning.

鈥淩iyadh Air has established its data and AI infrastructure on-cloud to develop AI applications aimed at differentiating its guest experience and enhancing its commercial and operational performance,鈥 he said.

Ahmad highlighted the effectiveness and accuracy of many AI applications, especially those based on generative AI, which rely on a detailed understanding of language and its dialectical nuances.

鈥淭his deep understanding can make all the difference in the model鈥檚 analysis of text or speech input, extraction of insights, and the accuracy of the model鈥檚 responses to user queries,鈥 he said, underscoring the need for such models to be trained in Arabic dialects.

鈥淎I models, and more specifically large language models, should be trained on the native language (both text and speech) and fine-tuned with the various dialects present in the Kingdom and its priority source markets of visitors.

鈥淢oreover, 抖阴短视频 has specific cultural aspects related to social values, customs, education, and communication 鈥 Developing AI solutions and innovations in the Kingdom comes with challenges, but the Kingdom is working to bridge the gap.鈥

For 抖阴短视频鈥檚 tourism sector and other emerging industries to reap the benefits AI has to offer, Ahmad said the Kingdom should focus on data collection, the entry of cloud providers, and on supporting local tech talent.

鈥淔irst, AI applications require a vast amount of clean historical data, typically in the range of hundreds of thousands to millions of data rows,鈥 he said.

鈥淗owever, the emerging Saudi tourism sector currently faces limitations in data availability and quality. To address this, organizations in 抖阴短视频 should focus on extensive data collection through first-party data strategies and partnerships for second and third-party data exchange.

鈥淚n the meantime, AI models can be developed as proof of concepts and later fine-tuned as data sources are enriched.鈥

鈥淪econd, many organizations in the Kingdom have legacy technology infrastructure that cannot support the deployment and productionalization of large-scale AI applications.

鈥淗owever, the entry of cloud providers into the Kingdom through local data centers has begun to alleviate this challenge, particularly as cloud service providers make their most advanced AI services available in these data centers.

鈥淭he third challenge is the undersupply of AI talent in the Saudi market, which has led to limited AI innovation locally. To address this, local organizations are tapping into global AI talent pools.鈥

High-quality data and robust governance are key pillars for developing effective AI models that generate accurate results. That is why the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence has created the National Data Management Office and the National Data Index.

鈥淭o address this, SDAIA has devised the NDMO and NDI frameworks, which regulate and standardize data governance and management across the Kingdom, thus accelerating AI development and leading to value creation from data insights,鈥 Ahmad said.

鈥淎dditionally, the Kingdom has set clear standards for residency of AI applications based on the classification of data sets required for those applications. This has fueled a healthy competition among cloud providers to build compliant data centers in the Kingdom, offering a comprehensive range of their AI applications and services.鈥

Most recently, the Kingdom pioneered AI regulations by defining a set of in collaboration with the EU and in line with its AI Act.

鈥淭his framework ensures that AI development is ethical, transparent, and compliant with personal data protection standards,鈥 Ahmad said.

If the Kingdom is able to overcome challenges such as data availability, technological infrastructure, and talent scarcity, Ahmad believes 抖阴短视频 will make significant strides in AI development and adoption.

鈥淭he successful implementation of AI solutions, tailored to local languages, cultural nuances, and compliant with regulatory frameworks, is crucial for unlocking the full potential of AI in driving the tourism sector.鈥

RIYADH: In an address to the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Saudi representative sounded the alarm on the escalating threat of space debris to human rights and sustainable development, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Speaking on behalf of 123 countries, Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, 抖阴短视频鈥檚 permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, emphasized the need for outer space sustainability to safeguard the transformative benefits of space technology for humanity.

The use of space has 鈥渞evolutionized global communications, weather forecasting, and disaster management,鈥 he said, underlining the pivotal role these advances play in protecting fundamental human rights.

However, the ambassador cautioned that the growing problem of space debris poses a significant risk to the infrastructure supporting these operations.

This threat, he said, could severely impede the global community鈥檚 ability to protect and promote essential human rights.

Bin Khothaila drew direct links between the management of space debris and the UN鈥檚 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

He emphasized that effective space debris mitigation is crucial for maintaining access to technologies that underpin weather monitoring, disaster response and urban planning.

The Saudi envoy鈥檚 concerns are echoed by key UN bodies.

The UN Office for Outer Space Affairs and the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space have each underscored the importance of space debris management for the safety of space operations, international security, environmental protection and satellite services that contribute to human rights and development.

RIYADH: The Red Sea Film Foundation, in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Jeddah, has announced the winners of the fourth 48-Hour Film Challenge at a ceremony held at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah.

The event was attended by Red Sea Film Foundation Managing Director Shivani Malhotra Pandya and Acting CEO Mohammed Al-Asiri, and French Consul General Mohammed Nehad. 

The challenge, aimed at encouraging emerging talents to innovate and present fresh perspectives in their cinematic projects, was organized in partnership with the Consulate General of France in Jeddah, the Embassy of France in Riyadh, and the Alliance Francaise, according to the foundation.

The ceremony honored the two winning teams: 鈥淎FEN,鈥 led by Nawaf Al-Kanani, and 鈥淎ll in One Night (AION),鈥 led by Rawan Al-Ghamdi. 

Both teams will have the opportunity to screen their films at the Red Sea International Film Festival 2024 and will participate in an artist residency program at one of France鈥檚 leading film schools in 2025.

The challenge took place from July 26-27, during which participants were tasked with writing, shooting and editing a short film in just 48 hours. 

Prior to the challenge, participants attended two days of intensive workshops and professional mentorship led by industry experts. These included a directing workshop led by filmmaker Faris Godus, a screenwriting and editing workshop by director and screenwriter Amjad Al-Rasheed, and a production workshop conducted by producer Deema Azar.

Three intensive professional days were organized for the 15 short-listed teams by the French Consulate in partnership with the foundation and Art Jameel on Sept. 17, 18 and 19. 

The two winners were selected based on high artistic standards by a jury composed of filmmakers and industry professionals, including Egyptian actor Ahmed Malek and Saudi actress Sarah Taibah. 

The jury praised the winning films, highlighting them as promising cinematic works that reflected the talents and potential of Saudi and local filmmakers in the industry.

Pandya said: 鈥淭he foundation remains a driving force in championing the next generation of filmmakers. We have seen past winners go on to achieve great success in the industry, and we are proud to have been part of that journey. Also, the opportunity for winners to showcase their films at our festival in December provides unparalleled exposure, giving their work a platform that truly sets them apart.鈥

Al-Asiri congratulated the winners, saying: 鈥淭his challenge highlights the incredible talent and potential of emerging Saudi filmmakers. At the Red Sea Film Foundation, we are committed to nurturing and empowering these creatives, and we eagerly anticipate the impact their future projects will have on both the local and international film landscapes.鈥 

Nehad said: 鈥淭his project illustrates the excellence of the relationship between both countries and illustrates a successful cooperation in supporting the young talents in cinema. France, with its long experience in cinema, and 抖阴短视频, with this wonderful dynamism, have a lot to share. Among numerous common projects in the bilateral cooperation, cinema is one of the top priorities and will go on during the Red Sea Film Festival.鈥

Riyadh: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived on Friday to New York City with the Kingdom鈥檚 delegation to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Prince Faisal and the Kingdom鈥檚 delegation will engage in several official meetings, aiming to enhance multilateral international work and discuss developments on regional and international fronts.

The meetings will also address efforts to establish global security and peace and joint efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.

The Kingdom鈥檚 delegation includes Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi ambassador to the US and a group of ministers, including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Alswaha, and Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Alibrahim.

The appointment of Ruba Mohammed Al-Masri to the role highlights the Kingdom鈥檚 empowerment of female athletes in recent years.

The FISU Student Ambassador program aims to promote the development of university sports and support sporting volunteer programs in ambassadors鈥 home countries.

Al-Masri told Arab News: 鈥淚 consider this historic achievement for Saudi sports as a true turning point. It fills me with pride and honor. This success is not just an individual accomplishment; it reflects the tremendous efforts being made by the Kingdom to support women鈥檚 sports and empower youth. Seeing a Saudi girl shine on the international stage represents a dream come true, and it opens new doors for young talents.鈥

Princess Reema bint Bandar, 抖阴短视频鈥檚 ambassador to the US, highlighted Al-Masri鈥檚 achievement as an example of the Kingdom鈥檚 dedication to advancing women in sports.

She posted on X: 鈥淲omen鈥檚 fencing in 抖阴短视频 has made great strides from 2016 when Lubna Al-Omair competed in the Olympic Games in Rio to today with athletes like Ruba.鈥

The acknowledgement from Princess Reema was an emotional milestone for Al-Masri. She said: 鈥淚t felt like a validation of all the hard work, dedication and sacrifices I had made throughout my journey as a female athlete.

鈥淗er support and recognition not only inspired me but also underscored the importance of empowering women in sports. Knowing that such a prominent figure believes in my potential is a tremendous honor and a powerful encouragement to keep pushing forward.鈥

Al-Masri鈥檚 fencing journey began in April 2018 and was deeply influenced by her father, a former champion in the Arab region.

鈥淕rowing up, I was always surrounded by his memorabilia 鈥 photos and medals that showcased his accomplishments throughout his athletic career,鈥 she said. 鈥淢oreover, with the recent initiatives led by our Crown Prince to empower women in sports, I felt encouraged to follow in his footsteps.鈥

Support from her family, particularly her parents, was instrumental in shaping her passion and ambition. But there were challenges along the path 鈥 Al-Masri faced several obstacles, including finding suitable training facilities and balancing her academic and professional commitments.

鈥淔inding suitable training facilities and the ability to register female athletes in clubs were significant hurdles,鈥 she said. 鈥淒espite these challenges, I am proud to say that I have persevered and built a name for myself in various fields. I hold a double major in law and aesthetic specialization, and I have simultaneously worked for three different marketing companies while excelling in my sport.鈥

As a student-athlete ambassador, Al-Masri intends to make a real impact on future generations.

鈥淚 aim to inspire young women to pursue their passions in sports while balancing their educational and personal lives,鈥 she said.

鈥淗aving successfully navigated my own journey 鈥 I believe my experiences can serve as a powerful testament to what is achievable.鈥

A defining moment in Al-Masri鈥檚 career came with the challenge of establishing her name on the international stage, overcoming issues such as unfair judging.

鈥淒espite these challenges, my determination only grew stronger,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ith the guidance and expertise of my father, I developed a unique training plan which enabled me to achieve significant milestones, including winning the first Saudi bronze medal in the Under-23 European Championships in 2023. This was a groundbreaking accomplishment for Saudi fencers in Europe.鈥

Looking ahead to the 2024/25 season, Al-Masri is eager to engage with the FISU Student Ambassadors Program.

鈥淚 look forward to collaborating on group proposals, participating in educational webinars, celebrating the International Day of University Sport, and presenting our action plans,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his structured approach will empower me to support female athletes and contribute effectively to the broader student-athlete community.鈥

The support from her community and mentors has been pivotal.

鈥淭he Saudi University Sports Federation, particularly Dr. Professor Khalid Al-Muzaini and Salma Ibrahim, has played a crucial role in my development,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 am also grateful to my coach, Fawad Al-Nasiri, for selecting me as the first Saudi female athlete to represent our country at the 2023 Summer Universiade in China. Their influence has been profound, motivating me to strive for greater heights.鈥
