Amateur Attieh creates history for 抖阴短视频 in professional golf

MUSCAT: Khalid Walid Attieh made history for 抖阴短视频 on Friday when he became the first amateur player from the country to make the cut in an elite professional tournament.

The 28-year-old from Riyadh shot a commendable round of one-under par 71 in the second round of the $2 million International Series Oman after an opening 73, and his two-day effort of even-par 144 was enough to qualify for the weekend in the Asian Tour event.

Playing in the last group of the day, Attieh finished with a bogey in near darkness, but that could not dampen his spirit.

鈥淚t is a very proud moment for me and a very proud moment for my country,鈥 said Attieh, who qualified for the tournament that features 21 LIV Golf stars by winning last week鈥檚 Oman Masters.

鈥湺兑醵淌悠 has done so much in golf over the past few years and we players have benefitted immensely from it. The best way I can acknowledge and thank Golf Saudi for all the support is by performing well for my country. And that鈥檚 why this is extremely satisfying.鈥

Attieh started the day from the 10th tee and quickly picked up a shot on the par-five 12th hole. However, he gave up that advantage on the other par-five on the back nine, the 16th. That hole was playing one of the toughest throughout the day.

On his back nine, the Saudi National Team member made a birdie on the par-five third and then made a stunning 25-footer downhill putt for his third birdie on the par-three eighth hole. On the ninth, Attieh was slightly distracted by his playing partner taking a long time after a wayward drive, and in failing daylight, he three-putted for a bogey from a long range.

The University of South California graduate, who has his own software business in 抖阴短视频, said: 鈥淚鈥檝e been playing well over the last few months. And finally, I got some things rolling my way today and put in a good round, which honestly could have been even lower.

鈥淏ut I am very happy with my score today. To be able to qualify for the event last week by winning the Oman Masters was very satisfying, but this is even better. I hope to keep the momentum and hopefully, more good rounds are coming on the weekend.鈥

Attieh, who made a comeback to golf after taking nearly two years off to complete his studies and then focus on setting up his business, said he plans to turn professional soon.

鈥淚 also had a small back injury, and I wanted to complete my studies. I started playing again about eight or nine months ago, and I found that I was playing just as good, if not better after my big break. So, I decided to get serious and worked hard on my game. Started working with a mental coach to get stronger mentally, and all of it seems to be paying dividends,鈥 said Attieh.

鈥淚鈥檓 very much looking forward to keep on raising the bar for myself and the flag for Saudi. I plan to turn pro soon, maybe by the end of summer this year. I want to try out the Qualifying Schools in both (the) Asian (Tour) and the DP World Tour. It should be (an) exciting few months ahead.鈥

  • He birdied two of the last three holes Sunday for a 3-under 69 to win by two over Rasmus Hojgaard

DUBAI: Rory McIlroy capped off a tumultuous year by winning the World Tour Championship and his sixth title as Europe鈥檚 No. 1 player. He birdied two of the last three holes Sunday for a 3-under 69 to win by two over Rasmus Hojgaard.
McIlroy hit wedge to within a foot on the 16th hole to break out of a tie with Hojgaard, then closed with a 6-foot birdie for his third title in the European tour鈥檚 season finale.
He won the Race to Dubai 鈥 previously known as the Order of Merit 鈥 for the sixth time in his career, leaving him two behind the record held by Colin Montgomerie and tying him with the late Seve Ballesteros.
Hojgaard, who rallied to stun McIlroy in the Irish Open in September, didn鈥檛 make a birdie over the final 11 holes and had to settle for a 71.
McIlroy was emotional when he came off the 18th green, his final event of a year memorable for so many reasons. He won four times 鈥 twice on the PGA Tour 鈥 but went a 10th consecutive year without a major when he threw away a late lead in the US Open.
He announced he was getting a divorce before the PGA Championship, and then scrapped those plans and said he and his wife would try to reconcile.
鈥淚鈥檝e been through a lot this year, professionally and personally,鈥 McIlroy said. 鈥淚t feels like the fitting end to 2024. I鈥檝e persevered this year a lot.鈥

鈥楤right is an understatement鈥 says Golf Saudi CEO about the sport鈥檚 future in the Kingdom
  • Noah Alireza speaks to Arab News about the Aramco Team Series, the GoGolf programs and producing homegrown talent

On a weekend that included the start of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, WWE Crown Jewel, as well as the Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam derbies in the Saudi Pro League, you could be forgiven for thinking there was any space left for any other sporting event to shine.

But golf鈥檚 Aramco Team Series 鈥 Riyadh, however, more than held its own and even drew in higher crowds than some of the rival events. The aim, said Golf Saudi CEO Noah Alireza, is to spread the golfing gospel.

鈥淥ur focus on global events comes with a primary objective of growing the game locally,鈥 Alireza said. 鈥(At Aramco Team Series) we (saw) a really vibrant crowd thatwas really getting into it.

鈥淚t鈥檚 all about creating the right environment and with this crowd being here as a captive audience, we, as much as possible, push towards them signing up for GoGolf, the program, and converting them into future golfers.鈥

As the 2024 golf season draws to a close, Alireza said that his federation鈥檚 mandate is to act as an 鈥渃atalyst and incubator鈥 to create a golf industry.

鈥淔or us in Saudi, we have a blank canvas,鈥 Alireza told Arab News. 鈥淲e鈥檙e starting from scratch, and that provides an opportunity not to catch up, but hopefully to leapfrog because as is everything (in the Kingdom) today, Saudi doesn鈥檛 look at things in terms of just taking what was there and bringing it here. It鈥檚 taking and learning from what was, and doing it better.

鈥淪o for us to grow the game in 抖阴短视频, our primary focus today is on the development of innovative supply and infrastructure, and hopefully when we build it, the demand will catch up and that鈥檚 how we're going to hopefully be creating a viable ecosystem for golf.鈥

One of the ways that Golf Saudi is looking to increase participation in the game, in accordance with Vision 2030, is through its GoGolf programs.

鈥淕oGulf is for us a complete product from end to end to get people from Saudi and living in 抖阴短视频 to get into Golf. So we鈥檙e starting with a program that answers the question why golf? What is golf? And then a call to action is GoGolf. GoGolf is a three-month (program), maybe you can look at it as getting a license to drive.鈥

Alireza appreciates that taking up golf comes with a significant sporting and financial dedication, and GoGolf aims to give budding players an early advantage.

鈥淕olf is not an easy game to play. In order to break that barrier, three months鈥 worth of free lessons, or a package of 12 free lessons, will get you the license to be able to play on golf courses and other areas. So it鈥檚 a teaching methodology, but beyond the teaching phase, there is other infrastructure under the GoGolf brand that we will be deploying in addition to other things we鈥檝e launched outside golf courses, like Top Golf 鈥 a project that鈥檚 going to be taking place over the next year and a half.鈥

Alireza has a message for parents looking to introduce their children to new sports and activities: 鈥淭he choices are plenty to get kids into sports, and all sports will teach kids certain traits,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hether it is discipline, motivation and so many other traits.

鈥淕rowing up around golf, I had the opportunity to see it first hand, and golf is slightly different from other sports in that it takes up so much time and you鈥檙e moving an object, you鈥檙e not reacting to a ball, you鈥檙e having to impart impact on to a ball and a lot of time in between there are so many things that you have to exercise. Patience, resilience, determination, the seeking of perfection and getting better every day, and I believe those traits are really good traits to start to ingrain into kids, and hopefully one day from that some of the kids will specialize in golf and create those future champions that we鈥檙e looking to create.鈥

Alireza is bullish about golf鈥檚 trajectory in the Kingdom over the coming years.

鈥淏right is an understatement,鈥 he said. 鈥淲ith the incredible support that we鈥檙e seeing in 抖阴短视频 today across all the sectors, we have an incredible opportunity to bring the world of golf here to co-innovate with us on creating a platform that defines what future golf will be in terms of the infrastructure, golf courses, practice facilities and beyond.鈥

While there are several Saudi golfers already making moves in the professional game, Alireza鈥檚 aim is to see a whole generation of golfers emerging from the Kingdom over the next decade.

鈥淚 think it's important that we focus on building that generation for two important reasons,鈥 he said. 鈥淣o.1 is that creating champions is an element that we鈥檝e seen as a story throughout history that helps generate future generations of champions.

鈥淪o when Saudi beat Argentina in the World Cup, that was a generational moment that not only created future football stars but athletes in general,鈥 Alireza said. 鈥淓veryone could now believe if somebody that I know of that is from my city, my country can do it, then so can I. And that element, that barrier, as a threshold is extremely important. So for us, the focus on creating those champions is really important because then it goes to the second reason.鈥

鈥淭he second reason is that that tipping point, when that champion is created, inshallah, and our goal is to have that happen within the next five to 10 years, is that it creates a whole new generation of golfers that sustains the golf economy that we鈥檙e seeking to create.鈥

  • Hull found water at the 18th hole and made bogey but kept the lead alone when Korda three-putted for bogey in near-darkness at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida

MIAMI: England鈥檚 Charley Hull fired a two-under par 68 and clung to a one-stroke lead over top-ranked Nelly Korda and China鈥檚 Zhang Weiwei after Saturday鈥檚 third round of the LPGA Annika tournament.
Hull found water at the 18th hole and made bogey but kept the lead alone when Korda three-putted for bogey in near-darkness at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida.
鈥淧layed pretty solid. I felt like I played well all day,鈥 Hull said. 鈥淏ut finishing in the dark wasn鈥檛 that fun. Shame to finish on a bogey but it was a good up-and-down.鈥
That left Hull on 12-under 198 with US star Korda, a six-time winner this year, shooting 67 to stand second on 199 with Zhang, who fired an LPGA career-low 62 to leap into contention.
鈥淚 just felt it was amazing day,鈥 Zhang said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know how to play that well today. Just keep patient and just like normal and then I holed a lot of putts. That made me so surprised on some holes.鈥
Thailand鈥檚 Wichanee Meechai and South Korea鈥檚 Im Jin-hee shared fourth on 201 with Germany鈥檚 Olivia Cowan fifth on 202 and a pack on 203 including Japan鈥檚 Minami Katsu, Mexico鈥檚 Gaby Lopez and Americans Rose Zhang and Bailey Tardy.
World number 12 Hull, a two-time LPGA winner seeking her first tour victory since October 2022, won her fourth Ladies European Tour title 鈥 and first in three years 鈥 two weeks ago at Riyadh.
Korda, in her first event after a neck injury sidelined her last month, seeks her first victory since June.
Hull opened with a birdie, added another at the par-5 seventh and had three birdie-bogey runs in the final seven holes 鈥 at the par-3 12th and par-4 13th, the par-5 14th and par-3 15th and the par-4 17th and 18, where she sank a four-foot bogey putt after a splashdown on her approach.
鈥淚t was kind of dark. Then it got the wind up, and I hit a really good 7-iron in and hit it pure. It just come up short in the water,鈥 Hull said.
鈥淭ricky little up-and-down, but my putt, I could barely see the hole. I couldn鈥檛 see the break or anything. So it was pretty dark to finish in.鈥
Korda stumbled early with bogeys at the second and fourth holes but closed the front nine with back-to-back birdies. She added birdies at 11 and 14, birdied 16 and 17 then had a three-putt bogey at 18 after a four-foot par putt miss.
鈥淚 had a good middle of the round. Just played some solid golf on the back nine and started hitting my driver a little better,鈥 Korda said.
She wasn鈥檛 happy about finishing in the dark either.
鈥淲as a little bit of poor planning by starting so late for us,鈥 Korda said. 鈥淲henever you鈥檙e sitting on 18 and the sun is already down, it鈥檚 never nice, especially with how slick these greens are and you can鈥檛 properly see.
鈥淎t the end of the day I鈥檓 the one that missed it.鈥
Zhang, 27, is a five-time China Tour winner whose best LPGA finish was a share of 10th at Portland in 2022.

  • McIlroy could have taken the lead outright but his birdie putt at the last horseshoed the cup
  • McIlroy looks sure of winning another Race to Dubai title for the most points gained throughout the year on the European tour

DUBAI: Rory McIlroy was tied for the lead with Rasmus Hojgaard and Antoine Rozner heading into the final round of the season-ending World Tour Championship as the Northern Irishman closed in on a sixth Race to Dubai title on Saturday.
McIlroy could have taken the lead outright but his birdie putt at the last horseshoed the cup, leaving him to make par for a 4-under 68 and 12-under par for the tournament alongside Hojgaard (66).
Rozner, who started the third round with a one-stroke lead, made it a three-way tie at the top by rolling in an eagle putt from 8 feet at No. 18 for a 69.
They were two strokes ahead of Jesper Svensson (68) and Joaquin Niemann (69), with Tyrrell Hatton (71) a further shot back after an expletive-filled round that included him snapping a club.
McIlroy looks sure of winning another Race to Dubai title for the most points gained throughout the year on the European tour. It would be No. 6, tying him with the late Seve Ballesteros and leaving him two behind the record of Colin Montgomerie.
But the No. 3-ranked McIlroy鈥檚 aim has been to hold two trophies on the 18th green on Sunday as he goes for his fourth tournament victory of the season worldwide.
Hojgaard, who birdied six of his first eight holes and made pars the rest of his round, is looking to emulate his twin brother, Nicolai, who won the season-closing event in Dubai last year.
Both Hojgaard and the No. 154-ranked Rozner are seeking to claim one of the 10 PGA Tour cards on offer for next season from the European tour.

Rozner rekindles Dubai romance to lead DP World Tour Championship

Antoine Rozner posted a stunning seven under par round of 65 to move into the lead at the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

The Frenchman, who has a good record in Dubai, having won the 2020 Golf in Dubai Championship presented by DP World, leads by one on nine under par with a stacked leaderboard in pursuit, including nearest challengers Tyrrell Hatton, of England, and Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy one shot back.

鈥淚 putted really well. It鈥檚 one of those days where everything goes in, and I had a ton of fun out there. I think with my caddie we had a really good fun, it was one of those days where everything goes right and took advantage of it,鈥 Rozner said.

Three-time DP World Tour winner Rozner was one under through his first eight holes, before catching fire from the ninth where he reeled off a trio of birdies, before adding another three in a row from the 14th to move into the 36-hole lead for the fourth time in his DP World Tour career.

Victory for Rozner on the Earth Course could also see him climb as high as second on the Race to Dubai and secure dual membership with the PGA TOUR for 2025.

Four-time Major Champion McIlroy posted a three under par 69, which could have been one better had a closing eagle putt not slid by, to strengthen his grip on the Harry Vardon Trophy.

The 17-time DP World Tour winner was four under through seven holes of his second round and threatening to open a comprehensive lead, but bogeys at the eighth and tenth opened the door for Rozner to seize the advantage, with his closing birdie earning him a round of 69.

The Northern Irishman leads the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex and with South Africa鈥檚 Thriston Lawrence 鈥 the only man able to deny him a sixth Race to Dubai title 鈥 nine shots off the lead on level par, McIlroy is in line to be crowned European No. 1 for the sixth time and move alongside the legendary Seve Ballesteros.

McIlroy said: 鈥淎 little disappointed that I didn鈥檛 kick on after such a great start, four under through seven. I just started to miss a few fairways around the turn, and not by much either, but the rough is so thick, and you lose all control of your golf ball if you hit it in there.鈥

Hatton matched playing partner McIlroy鈥檚 round of 69, bouncing back from a bogey at the fourth with birdies at the sixth, eighth, tenth and 15th to remain in the mix with two rounds to play. The Englishman has twice been a runner-up in the DP World Tour Championship in 2016 and 2022, and also finished second in last week鈥檚 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the first of the two events in the DP World Tour Play-Offs.

鈥淧retty similar thing to yesterday, to be honest, in terms of just not feeling very comfortable. Just every shot felt like a bit of a struggle, I guess. Three under is a pretty acceptable score, all things considered,鈥 Hatton said.

Chilean Joaquin Niemann sits in fourth place on seven under par, with Denmark鈥檚 Rasmus Hojgaard, Irishman Shane Lowry and Swede Jesper Svensson all posting five under par rounds of 67 to join Japan鈥檚 Keita Nakajima in a tie for fifth on six under.

The English trio of Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Wallace and Paul Waring are a shot further back in tied ninth, with the latter continuing his quest for back-to-back Rolex Series titles after his victory at Yas Links last week.
