ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has approved $200 million for the flood-affected tribal areas in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistani state media reported on Saturday.
Pakistan witnessed deadly floods induced by torrential monsoon rains last year that killed more than 1,700 people, affected 33 million and inundated a third of the country at one point.
The deluges caused the South Asian country, already suffering from economic woes, more than $30 million in financial losses.
"The funds have been approved as part of the program agreed with the Government of Pakistan to respond to the devastating floods that hit the country last year," the state-run Radio Pakistan broadcaster reported.
"The project will support emergency reconstruction and rehabilitation of flood protection infrastructure damaged by the floods."
Pakistan is among the top 10 countries most affected by climate change, while the country’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is less than 1 percent.
Last summer's deluges pushed millions into poverty and the national poverty rate was expected to increase by 4 percent, according to the country’s post-disaster assessment report.
