DUBAI: Bahrain supports all efforts toward achieving a just and comprehensive solution on the Palestinian issue, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, referring to a peace plan announced by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
The ministry thanked the United States for its work on the plan and urged the Israeli and Palestinian sides to start direct negotiations under US sponsorship.
While unveiling the plan, Trump thanked the ambassadors of the Gulf states of Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates for their support of peace efforts and for attending the event.
Meanwhile, Kuwait’s foreign ministry also said on Wednesday it “highly appreciates” US efforts to “end the over-70-year Arab-Israeli conflict, that has caused bitter sufferings to the Palestinian people and undermined regional security and stability.”
The statement, cited by state news agency KUNA, reiterated Kuwait’s commitment to an independent Palestinian state based on its borders before the Israeli occupation of the West Bank in 1967.
“Out of its principled and unwavering position based on backing the options of the Palestinian people, Kuwait restates that a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue can be reached only through compliance with relevant international legitimacy resolutions and terms of reference laid down by the international community,” the statement said.
Both Bahrain and Kuwait are allies of the United States in the Gulf region, with Bahrain hosting the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet.
