Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, headed Friday the Ƶn delegation to the ministerial meeting on Syria at the sidelines UN General Assembly’s 74thsession in New York.

The delegation included Minister of State for Arabian Gulf Affairs, Thamer Al-Sabhan.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry also took part in the meeting to discuss the latest developments on the Syrian arena and ways to resolve the crisis and end the conflict.

During the meeting, ministers explored a possible political settlement in Syria in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254, and the need to combat terrorist and extremist organizations in the country.

The risk of foreign fighters, especially in Idlib, was also discussed.

The meeting came after the announcement of the formation of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.

The constitutional committee will be made up of 150 members, including the opposition, civil society and government members. It was proposed during a peace conference hosted by Russia in January 2018, and will aim to rewrite the Syrian constitution.

In a statement, UN Secretary General António Guterres said the “Syrian-owned and Syrian-led” constitutional committee will be facilitated by the United Nations in Geneva.
