- Military says 60-70 ‘terrorists’ attacked troops fencing the border
- Urges Afghan government, army to exert “more effective control” on border regions
ISLAMABAD: Three army soldiers were killed and seven were injured in a gunfight with militants that the Pakistan army said had crossed over from neighbouring Afghanistan.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the media wing of the Pakistan army said a group of 60-70 militants had attacked security officials fencing the border with Afghanistan in Alwara, North Wazirstan, adding that they had travelled from “across the border from bases in Afghanistan.”
“While Pakistan security forces are solidifying border security through fencing and construction of forts to deny liberty of action to the terrorists, Afghan Security Forces and the authorities need to have more effective control in border region to support Pakistan’s efforts as well as deny use of Afghan soil against Pakistan,” the army statement said. “Pakistan’s fencing effort shall continue despite all such impediments.”
In 2017, Pakistan said it had started building a fence on its disputed 2,500 km (1,500 mile) border with Afghanistan to prevent incursions by militants in a move that has further strained relations between the two countries.
