JEDDAH: Ƶ’s Minister of Interior Prince Abdul Aziz bin Saud bin Naif announced a strategic plan for the General Directorate of Prisons, during a ceremony held at the Jeddah correctional prison.
The minister was received by the deputy governor of Makkah, Prince Abdullah bin Bandar, and the general director of prisons, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Al-Asmari.
Al-Asmari, in an address to the gathering, thanked King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their unlimited support toward the directorate and all other security sectors, adding that the prisons’ plan was to promote security and build a strong rehabilitation system for inmates.
After watching a documentary that showcased the prisons’ strategic plan and its components, Prince Abdul Aziz launched several initiatives, including the “Thiqa” (Trust) program — for rehabilitating inmates who still have to serve six months in prison — and the business centers’ initiative to facilitate procedures for inmates charged with defaulting on financial claims. Additionally, he oversaw the signing of an agreement between the General Directorate of Prisons and the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) to support the establishment of three research seats at three specialized universities, for crime prevention.
A memorandum of understanding was also signed between the General Directorate of Prisons and Al-Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, based on which inmates will be allowed to study at the university and training programs will be organized for the prisons’ staff.
