ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has approached the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to lodge a protest against a cartoon competition hosted by an anti-Islam politician in the Netherlands.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Abdullah Haroon has written a letter to the OIC secretary-general asking for a collective protest by all member states to Dutch authorities.
The leader of the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), Geert Wilders, last month announced a “Prophet Muhammad cartoon competition,” which has been approved by the Dutch NCTV counterterrorism agency.
“Pakistan will work closely with all OIC member states to raise the issue with the Dutch government,” said the Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, adding that Islamabad has summoned the Dutch ambassador and the EU envoy to register the protest.
“We have conveyed our condemnation of this deliberate attempt to vilify Islam. Such incidents should not go unpunished as they intentionally provoke the Muslim community across the world and incite intolerance and violence.”
