Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, has confirmed that production of the popular electric car Model 3 will start in July. Addressing a press conference in Vancouver, he said that by the end of the year Tesla cars should be able to go fully autonomous. “A Tesla car should be able to go from Los Angeles to New York without a driver having to touch controls,” he said.
Musk also presented some ideas for the future including a tunnel under Los Angeles to transport electric cars at high speeds to beat traffic congestion. He revealed photos of a giant boring machine, nicknamed Nannie, which is about 26 feet in diameter and about 400 feet long and weighs around 1,200 tons. He is considering buying the German-made machine for his project.
Musk is also involved in Space-X to develop technologies for space travel, which he founded in 2002. He revealed that Tesla is working on a new electric truck that resembles sports cars in design. He expects self-driven cars to be more common in two years’ time.
