JEDDAH: The executive committee of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent will hold an emergency meeting in Tunisia on Sunday to discuss the deteriorating conditions of Syrian refugees and the conditions in Yemen and Libya.
The meeting will be held under the chairmanship of Mohammed Al-Hadid, president of the Jordan National Red Crescent Society, in the presence of heads and trustees of the Arab Red Crescent Societies and members of executive organizing committee.
Saleh bin Hamad Al-Suhaibani, the secretary-general of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross, emphasized enhancing the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers in light of international humanitarian law, as they are always exposed to dangers.
In the meeting, they will also discuss a proposal to establish a Red Crescent and Red Cross network in member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
He said the mechanism aims to support continuing relief work, and continuous coordination, particularly with the recent launch of humanitarian appeals by the OIC, and follow up on continued humanitarian relief.
Al-Suhaibani expressed his regret over the tragic displacement of people from Aleppo, Mosul and Yemen, though international mechanisms, civilians and volunteers are trying to provide them humanitarian assistance.
In the meeting, they will also discuss the situation of refugees under international humanitarian law, to provide them protection, in light of the forum held for relief efforts and humanitarian action for Syrian refugees in Turkey.
He said through this emergency meeting, the organization is seeking to circulate an initiative on other conflict zones, find humanitarian solutions, mobilize relief resources, and identify the role of Arab societies in providing rapid responses to meet these humanitarian challenges, and to search for alternative solutions in collaboration with partners.
The meeting will discuss many hot topics of the Arab world and international issues of common interest in humanitarian relief, and issues involving conflicts and wars.
