The Ministry of Labor said that 5.3 million foreign workers legalized their work status during the grace period, which began on April 3.
“The ministry is currently making plans to arrest labor regulation violators when the grace period comes to an end on Nov. 3, after which it will begin rigorous inspections,” said Abdullah Abuthnain, undersecretary for Inspections and Development at the Ministry of Labor.
More than 1.5 million workers transferred their sponsorship to new employers and 1.3 million changed their work description, while 2.5 million changed their residence permits, Al-Hayat daily reported on Sunday.
Abuthnain said the ministry organized training programs for inspectors to teach them to look for violations in establishments where violations are more likely to occur.
Abuthnain said the ministry would also supply special vehicles for its inspectors to visit locations across the Kingdom.
He said that the ministry plans to implement a project for private establishments for self-correction.
“The establishments will supply us with all the information we want to check. We will verify matters with the help of private sector companies,” he said.
