Saudi contractors have completed about 80 percent of the Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical (SATORP) project.
Indicating this, Saudi Aramco stated that the SATORP project, which will provide about 5,700 direct and indirect jobs, is one of the most complex refineries in the world. Through this project, Saudi Aramco seeks to become one of the three largest global refiners in the petrochemicals industry.
SATORP’s joint venture with TOTAL French company is located in Jubail Industrial City in the east coast of the Kingdom.
The project will handle 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Arab heavy crude oil for refining into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
According to Saudi Aramco, SATORP’s refined oil production reached 400,000 bpd in August, 2014. In addition, the complex produces, on a yearly basis, more than a million tons of paraxylene, benzene and high-purity propylene.
The SATORP project will raise the refining capacity of the Kingdom, and promote the local and global economies through investments worth SR50 billion, high quality refined oil, petrochemical and aromatic products to meet the growing local and global demand.
The facility refines heavy crude oil that is especially hard to process into high-value-added products, including diesel and jet fuel. The annual production of the project is estimated at 700,000 tons of paraxylene, 140,000 tons of benzene and 200,000 tons of propylene.
